Trees with Hair Standing Up, Bear’s Heart, Ledger Book Drawing. National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution (D206231).

Trying to Walk while Holding Marbles on a Board

The teachers lined us up in the hall for shots.

The light from the window at the end of the hall shined

on the polished floor.

The light made a small cloud running to the window.

I wore a cotton dress with an undershirt for warmth, but still

my legs quivered.

We were prisoners of the nurses standing there.

They took my arm

that was a bone the needle worked its way to.
